Men’s Track & Field Fares Well At GVSU Holiday Open

The Detroit Titans men's track and field team had one last tune-up before the Christmas break as the Titans set four new career marks at the Laker Turf Building at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday. 

Freshman Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) was the highest finisher on the day for the Titans taking third in the 600-meters with a time of 1:24.43. He also ran with freshmen Derek Baker (Carleton, MI/Airport), Vincent Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland) and Joesph Raffin (Valparaiso, IN/Chesterton) to guide the Titan B 4x400-meter relay to a sixth-place effort in 3:32.82. 

Senior Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Wingate) turned in a personal record 50.61 for eighth in the 400m and was also 14th in the 200m in 23.16. 

Senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) turned in a career best 15:49.21 in the 5000m for fifth place, while junior Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) hit an indoor PR with a 16:06.37, good for the 10th. 

Raffin placed 12th in his debut in the 400m with a run of 51.26 and was 27th in the 200m posting a 23.46. Senior Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit) timed a 23.20 in the 200m for 16th place, while sophomore Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) was 14th in the 400m (51.46) and 24th in the 200m (23.40). 

Sophomore Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) ran an 8.55 for fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) was 12th in the event in 8.82, while Lefler took 14th with a time of 8.89 after nailing a personal best 8.54 in the preliminaries. 

Freshman Ja'Quan Patterson (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) jumped his way to ninth in the long competition with a mark of 6.49m/21'3.5". 

The UDM men will have a few weeks off before they compete in a Quad Meet against Eastern and Central Michigan and Oakland in Ypsilanti on Friday, Jan. 15.
