Gorzynska Named MVP At Annual UDM Cross Country Banquet

Senior Beata Gorzynska made her last season in Detroit a memorable one and she was honored as the 2009 team MVP at the Annual Cross Country banquet. Along with Gorzynska, three other UDM harriers took home awards as well as two seniors who ran four years for the Titans.

Kevin Donner MVP- Beata Gorzynska- Had her best season at Detroit, finishing as the top Titan on all but one occasion. Gorzynska made her season debut improving her best 5k by a minute taking 10th at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invite in 19:31, which ranks 14th on the all-time Titan Cass-Benton 5k list. She then broke that 5k PR running 19:14 at the National Catholics and followed that with 19:15 at Louisville. Her 6k PR of 23:16 was set at Bowling Green and she improved her Horizon League finish by 29 spots taking 24th to top the team. She ended the year as the top runner at the NCAA Regional taking 132nd in 23:32 on the tough Indiana course.

Student-Athlete- Kristie Ferrans- Holding a 3.9 GPA in education, Ferrans had her most consistent season finishing as a top five Titan all season. Kristie ran a 6k PR of 23:55 at Bowling Green and her season best 5k of 19:42 was at Louisville. She also improved 20 places taking 34th at the Horizon League Championships and 191st at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

Coach's Award- Alexandria Vintevoghel- The freshman made an immediate impact right from the start finishing as the top Titan in her collegiate debut running 19:39 for eighth at the Golden Grizzly Open. Her 19:16 run at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invite was the eighth best by a Titan rookie at Cass-Benton. She set her season best 5k of 19:19 at Louisville and a week later in the mud at the Michigan Intercollegiate, where she was also the top Titan. Vintevoghel's 6k PR of 23:18 was turned in at Bowling Green and was the second best time by a rookie in Detroit history. She also finished 25th at the Horizon League Championship and recovered from a fall at the Great Lakes Regional to place 175th.

Rookie of the Year- Katrina Oberski- The freshman finished in the Varsity 7 all season, running her season best 5k of 20:09 at Louisville and 6k PR of 24:06 at Bowling Green. Oberski finished 42nd at the HL meet and also was academically successful in the classroom earning all-A's for a 3.92 in her first semester in nursing.
