The University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department participated in National Girls & Women in Sport Day, which took place prior to the women's basketball game against Milwaukee this past Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. There was an overwhelming response from girls ages 8-13 as more than 175 attended the event.

Autumn Rademacher, the Detroit head women's basketball coach, welcomed all participants and talked about the importance of sports and how college athletics has played a major role in her life. Rademacher played women's basketball at UDM and graduated in 1997.

All participants were put into groups and then rotated to different stations where there were Detroit student-athletes on hand to provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations. The different sports in attendance were women's soccer, women's tennis, women's golf, women's lacrosse, softball, women's track & field, as well as cheerleading.

"We were extremely excited about the number of girls that attended the Girls & Women in Sport Day to learn about the importance of the role of women in sports," said UDM Assistant AD and Senior Woman Administrator Teri Kromrei. “It turned out to be a great event and I am very thankful to all those who helped make it successful."

After the game, there was an autograph session with all sports that provided hands-on demonstrations, as well as the women's basketball squad.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrated 24 years as an annual event that brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States since its enactment in 1971.
