Cross Country On Their Way To Ranked-Filled Penn State Nationals

DETROIT -- The Titans last tune-up before the Horizon League championships will be a challenging one as Detroit makes its way to the Keystone State to compete in the Penn State Nationals on Saturday.

The men's 5.2k race will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the women's 6k scheduled to start at 11:00 p.m.

A number of ranked programs will be at the event, including the No. 1 women's team in the country in Villanova, according to the latest poll from the United States Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The women will also race against No. 7 Syracuse and No. 30 Penn State as well as Miami (Ohio), who is current receiving votes in the national poll. Some of regionally ranked teams in the field will be Cornell (Northeast Region, No. 6), Colgate (Northeast Region, No. 11), West Virginia (Mid-Atlantic, No. 6) and Maryland (Mid-Atlantic, No. 6), and some top non-division I programs in Dickinson (USTFCCCA DIII, No. 18; Mideast, No. 2) and Grand Valley State (USTFCCCA DII, No. 1; Midwest, No. 1).

The women are coming off a sixth-place finish among Division I teams at the Michigan Intercollegiate. Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City) earned Co-Horizon League Athlete of the Week after leading the Titans for the fifth time this season with a time of 19:41, good for 49th in the 5k race.

The men also have their hands full as the red, white and blue will be joined by the likes of No. 14 Syracuse and No. 23 in the host Nittany Lions. Villanova (USTFCCCA, ORV; Mid-Atlantic, No. 4), Penn (Mid-Atlantic, No. 6), Maryland (Mid-Atlantic, No. 10), George Mason (Southeast, No. 14), Eastern Michigan (Great Lakes, No. 9), Lock Haven (USTFCCCA DII, No. 14; Atlantic, No. 2) and Grand Valley State (USTFCCCA DII, No. 4; Midwest, No. 1) are some of the other ranked programs that will hit the course.

The Titans took third at the Michigan Intercollegiate last week, despite not running their full varsity squad. Even then, Detroit had a great performance by senior Ryan Ayala (Coopersville, MI/Coopersville) who was tabbed the HL Cross Country Athlete of the Week as well as the HLN's 'People's Choice' award winner after clocking a 27:25 for 33rd place.

Results of the race will be posted as soon as they are available through www.runhigh.com.
