Men’s Track & Field Finishes Second at Horizon League Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – The men's track and field team finished second in the 2011 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships. Lesley Hanna and Vushaun Landrum each recorded first place finishes for the Titans on Sunday.

Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas, Coakley) was named the Most Outstanding Running Performer for his efforts in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and also by running a leg in the 4x400 meter relay. Hanna helped Detroit accumulate 36 points on Sunday with a first place finish in each race he participated in as well as a third place finish in the high jump. “LJ put together a great meet,” head coach Guy Murray explained. “He is a great competitor, and a great talent.”

Hanna set a Horizon League indoor record in the 400-meter dash clocking in at 46.92. He also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.47. The team of Hanna, Joe Raffin (Valparaiso, IN, Chesterton)Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON, Denis Morris Catholic), and Vince Lefler (Midland, MI , Midland) also set a Horizon League indoor record with a time of 3:15.58 in the 4x400 meter relay. Hanna ran a 46.2 split as the hammer leg of the relay team and passed two competitors on his way to the finish line giving Detroit 10 points for the win. Hanna also earned a third place finish in the high jump. The senior cleared 6-6.25.

Raffin ran well for the Titans in the 400-meter dash. The sophomore finished third with a time of 48.65. “Raffin's finish was big for us,” Murray added. “He was able to speed past the YSU runner at the wire for third place.”

Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON, Sandwich Secondary) won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.85. Landrum helped Detroit defend the 60-meter title as Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI, Ferndale ) was the winner in 2010. This year Cleary got the team four points in the 60-meter dash with a fourth place finish. He crossed the finish line at 6.94. Landrum also scored points for Detroit in the 200-meter finals. He placed fourth with a time of 21.91.

Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI, Yale) came up big in the 60-meter hurdles. Campbell entered Sunday as the eight seed in the finals, yet he came up with a second place finish clocking in at 8.33. “Campbell's performance as an eight seed really got things going for us,” Murray explained. “The team got excited and really rose to the occasion after his race.” 

Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON, Denis Morris Catholic) took sixth place in the 800-meter run for Detroit. Mahler earned one point for the team by clocking in at 1:52.81. Patrick Liederbach (Petoskey, MI, Petoskey) also recorded points for Detroit with a fifth place finish in the 3,000-meter run (8:31.92).

In the heptathlon it was Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI, St. Francis) taking fifth place, as teammate Anthony Donald (Waterville, OH, Anthony Wayne) took seventh. Hennrick ended the weekend with 4,386 points. Donald earned 4,141 points.
