Hanna Earns Team MVP Award

DETROIT – The men's track and field team ended the 2011 season by competing in the Horizon League Outdoor Championships. Head Coach Guy Murray announced award winners from the indoor and outdoor season on Monday, May 9 at the team luncheon held at the Titan Club.

Lesley Hanna was recognized as the team MVP for both the indoor and outdoor season. Hanna had a special senior campaign as he dominated the 400-meter dash in the Horizon League. He made a major impact for Detroit during the HL Indoor Championships by accumulating 36 points for the Titans.

Hanna was named the Most Outstanding Running Performer at the HL Indoor Championships for his efforts in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and also by running a leg in the 4x400 meter relay. He set a Horizon League indoor record in the 400-meter dash clocking in at 46.92 and he also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.47. Hanna helped the Titans set a Horizon League record in the 4x400 meter relay with a 46.2 split as the hammer leg. Detroit won the event with a time of 3:15.58.

Hanna was also a top performer for Detroit in the HL Outdoor Championships. He became the 400-meter dash champion with a time of 47.28. Hanna nearly won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.52, but he was held off in a photo finish. The senior took part in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay races. Hanna helped the Titans set a new UDM record in the 4x100 as the team crossed the line in 41.45. The 4x400 team placed third overall with a time of 3:17.59.

Hanna's best time in the 200-meter dash during the outdoor season came at the Beach Invite when he clocked in at 21.07. His season-best 400-meter time occurred at the 53rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 14. Hanna recorded the top time in the league with a 46.72 performance. His time of 46.72 is currently the 52nd fastest time in the nation. He is ranked 26th in the East Region.

The Student Athlete Award went to Taylor Hennrick for the outdoor season. The indoor season award was split between Aviram Campbell and Vushaun Landrum. Hennrick was quite impressive for Detroit in the decathlon at this year's HL Outdoor Championships. The junior set a personal record in seven of the 10 events. He set a UDM record with 6,192 points and took third place overall. Hennrick improved his score 1,000 points from last year's meet.

Campbell and Landrum each ran well for the Titans at the HL Indoor Championships. Campbell snuck into the 60-meter hurdle finals as the eight seed, yet he shocked the competition with a second place finish clocking in at 8.33. Landrum was crowned Horizon League Champion in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.85. The junior also scored points for Detroit in the 200-meter dash. He placed fourth with a time of 21.91.

Earnest Cleary and Deonte Osayande shared the Coach's Award for the outdoor season while the combo of Matt Mahler and Kevin Wozniak shared the honor for the indoor season. Cleary placed sixth overall in the 100-meter dash finals at the HL Outdoor Championships. He crossed the finish line in 10.94. The senior was also a part of the 4x100 meter relay team that set a UDM school record with a time of 41.45.

Osayande battled through a series of injuries during the outdoor season. His best 100-meter dash time was recorded at the 2011 Colonial Relays. Osayande crossed the finish line in 11.07. The senior also ran well for Detroit in the 200-meter dash at the Colonial Relays. He ran the 11th fastest league time at the meet, crossing the line at 22.33.

Mahler helped two Titan relay teams pick up first place finishes at the HL Indoor Championships. He was part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team that finished in 3:15.58 and also helped the distance medley relay team take first place with a time of 9:57.48. Individually, Mahler took sixth place in the 800-meter run. The senior finished the race in 1:52.81. Wozniak was also in action for Detroit in the 800-meter run. He ran it in 1:58.36.

Detroit's Most Improved Award went to Edwin Gay and Brian Greenhoe for the outdoor season. Joe Raffin and Ja'Quan Patterson shared the honor for the indoor season. Greenhoe and Gay finished back-to-back in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the HL Outdoor Championships. Greenhoe finished in ninth place overall (10:04.92) while Gay was close behind in tenth (10:06.16). Gay's best steeplechase time of the season came at the Gina Relays when he clocked in at 10:00.03.

Raffin had a solid performance during the HL Indoor Championships. He was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that set a Horizon League record with a time of 3:15.58. Individually, Raffin placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.65. Patterson was a key member of the team that performed well in the jump events. He recorded the third-best Horizon League mark in the long jump with a distance of 23-2.50 in the HL Indoor Championships. Patterson also competed in the triple jump for Detroit. His best mark of the year was 45-1.

Eric Lewis swept Rookie of the Year honors for both the indoor and outdoor season. The freshman led Detroit in all throwing events. During the outdoor season, Lewis excelled in the hammer throw. He set a personal record and a Titan Rookie Record at the HL Outdoor Championships with a throw of 167-10 (51.16m). Lewis also performed well in the shot put and discus. His best mark in the shot put was recorded at The Detroit vs. Oakland Dual (43-3), and his best discus throw of the season came at the Lyle Bennett Open (143-4). Lewis recorded two sixth place finishes at the HL Indoor Championships. He recorded a distance of 44-9 in the shot put, and 51-4.25 in the weight throw. Both marks were career-highs.
