25 Years Of The Titan Invite

NORTHVILLE, Mich. -- Senior Kirstin Mooney and junior Katrina Oberski finished in the top 10 as the Titans had four runners in the top 20 en route to a second-place finish at the 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational. The annual home race – which began as just a women's cross country race on September 12, 1987 – was held at Cass-Benton Park in Northville.

“A successful day and weekend for the 25th anniversary of the race,” said head coach Guy Murray. “The rain made it a test of cross country, battling the elements as well as the other runners without worry about the time.”

The women posted 74 points, defeating Horizon League rival Cleveland State (88), while finishing only behind Wayne State (45) in the 5k race.

“It was a good race and nice to beat Cleveland State (6th in HL last year to our 8th),” said Murray. “We did a nice job of racing and moving up in the race.”

The Titans were led by Mooney, who finished as UDM's top runner for the second-straight week. Mooney claimed fifth in a time of 20:07, her career best at Cass-Benton.

“Kirstin is off to a great start and she gets out and competes,” added Murray.

Oberski was right behind Mooney taking sixth in 20:08, just 11 seconds off her career mark. It's the second year in a row she was in the top 20 after finishing 14th in 2010.

Junior Olivia Smid was able to record a 10th-place finish in her career 5k debut, running the course in a time of 20:31, while sophomore Rachel Hofsess was 19th in 20:52, just one second off her time of a year ago.

Sophomore Torrie Eger earned 35th in 22:01, while freshman Sara Taylor (50th – 23:18) and junior Katie Weishaar (62nd – 24:26) rounded out the Titan line-up.

The 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational got started on Friday evening as alums of the race and the cross country program got together on campus at the Titan Pavilion.

It was 25 years ago that the first race was held in which only the women competed. Notre Dame ended up winning that event with 25 points, while Detroit was second totaling 35. The race that day also featured Macomb, Cleveland State, Schoolcraft, Highland Park and St. Mary's (IN). Theresa Rice of the Fighting Irish won the race in 18:49, while the Titans claimed three of the next four spots in runner-up Bonnie Fitzpatrick (19:14), fourth place Nancy Mandziara (19:53) and fifth place Nancy Calder (19:57).

Saturday's race day started out with some pouring rain, but it did clear up once the college races went off. At 9:30 a.m., the event began with the men's and women's open 5k races, with Matt Fecht winning the men's open race for the third year in a row. Fecht, a WSU alum, has already qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon.

After the open races, the event featured the middle school 1.5 mile race, an addition to the legendary Titan Invite in 2010. The annual Tommy Titan Kids 9-under race followed before the main event in the college showdown.

Detroit returns to action on Friday as UDM heads to another race that has been a part in its history in the National Catholic Championships, hosted by Notre Dame.
