Athlete Sit-Down: Sam Saikalis

We got a chance to talk to Waterford Mott senior, Sam Saikalis, who has already had a tremendous start to her indoor season.

Personal Records:

60 Meter Hurdles - 10.02

High Jump - 5-6

Long Jump - 16-8

Michigan MileSplit: It's no secret that High Jump is your favorite event with long jump more of a secondary event, but I saw that you hurdled a few weeks ago. Is that something you are looking to do more of this season or was it just a one-time deal?

Sam Saikalis: High jump is definitely my main event, but I do plan on running hurdles more often.  I run them every once in a while because I started doing the heptathlon last summer and I'm trying to stay in shape for it.

MI MileSplit: Have you started at looking at any colleges? Going to try and do track there?

SS: My ultimate goal is to run track in college.  I've been talking to a couple different coaches but no decisions have been made yet.

MI MileSplit: What are some things you are hoping to accomplish this indoor season? What about outdoor?

SS: This indoor season I'm hoping to be all state and also medal at the New Balance Nationals.  I'm working on jumping 5'7 before the season ends and 5'8 outdoor.

MI MileSplit: How/when did you get involved in track?

SS: I first got involved in track in 8th grade with my friends but started getting really competitive freshman year of high school.

MI MileSplit: Who has been one of the most influential people in your track life?

SS: I am lucky enough to have outstanding coaches for both school and club track.  They really are more than coaches and play a huge role in my life.  Jason Bazner, the throws coach at my school, has really influenced me not only as an athlete, but a person.  He has seen how successful I can be and always pushes me to my full potential.  Over the past 3 years he has really been there for me with his encouraging attitude especially when I was out because if an injury.  He knows how to bring out my competitive side which helps me achieve my goals.  Even in the off season he goes out of his way to get in the weight room and I can always count on him to be there for me.
