Pat Liederbach
(Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) once again etched his name in UDM history and junior Alex Harris posted his first sub-100 finish at a regional as the Detroit Titans men's cross country team finished 21st with 571 points at the annual NCAA Great Lakes Regional, held at Indiana University on Saturday.

“We did okay in achieving the point goal, but missed an opportunity to move up in the standings,” said head coach Guy Murray, who was at the regional for the 25th-straight year as a coach and student-athlete.

Liederbach became just the third harrier in school history to have at least three top 100 finishes after taking 60th in 32:40. The performance was his fastest by seven seconds as well as 14 spots higher then his previous highs at the GLR, set as a freshman in 2007.

“Pat did a nice job pacing himself,” said Murray. “The pace was fast early and a lot of guys blew up and Pat moved up steadily.”

Junior Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine), who has battled a few nagging injuries throughout the season, had his best regional race placing 81st in 33:05, just the 11th Titan to place in the top 100.

“A great race for Alex as he is finally healthy and ran like we knew he could run,” noted Murray.

Sophomore Alex Vanias (Leroy, MI/Pine River) was the third Titan in taking 114th in 33:52, while junior Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) was 160th at 35:01, his best regional by 23 spots and a 2:30 improvement then his time as a freshman in 2007.

“Kevin has had a tough year, but has worked so hard and stayed positive and had a very good day,” commented Murray. “Today's race is a bit more indicative of where he should be.”

Senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) finished his Titan career with a strong time of 35:03 for 161st, while sophomore Derek Hoerman (Canton,MI/Canton) placed 179th with a time of 35:54.

The Titans 2009 cross country season is now over as most of the team will now train for the track and field season, with the indoor slate getting underway in early December.
