It was a cold and windy fall day in Michigan, but that did not stop the Titan harriers from putting forth a good run as the Detroit men's cross country team took fifth at the Horizon League Championships, hosted by UDM at Kensington Metropark in Milford.

“The men's team was okay today,” said head coach Guy Murray. “We had a chance to be in there and fifth was good, but we thought we could do better so we will continue to work hard and improve.”

The Titans, who totaled 126 points, had three runners in the top 20. Butler won the race with 15 points, while Loyola (66), Milwaukee (93) and UIC (98) made the top four.

Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) became just the third Titan to earn three All-League honors in their career as the junior was a second-team All-Horizon League member after finishing 10th in the 8k in 26:11.

“The thing about weather is that everyone has to deal with it,” said Liederbach. “The times were a little slower with it, but I thought we ran well and I know that personally, I could have run better.”

Sophomore Alex Vanias (Leroy, MI/Pine River) was next for UDM, just missing Horizon League honors, taking 18th in 26:59, while junior Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine) got in the top 20 right at the mark in 27:07.

Senior Alex Gould's (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) final HL run proved to be a good one as he took 38th with a time of 28:07. Sophomore Erik Westbrook (Fremont, MI/Fremont) was 40th with a run of 28:17, while junior Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic) and sophomore Bob Radlich (Cheektowaga, NY / Cleveland Hill) were right behind him at 43rd (28:27) and 45th (28:30), respectively.

It was a festive day throughout the event as Titan greats from Hall-of-Famer Bonnie (Fitzpatrick) Wood to three-time All-MCC performer Ken Dubois were on hand to cheer on UDM and present the Horizon League awards to the winners. Tommy Titan was also on hand for two kid's races, which included some treats for all the participants at the end of their run.

The Titans will now get ready for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships, held in Bloomington, IN, on Saturday, Nov. 14.
