Two UDM Records Set In Season Opening Meet

Full Results

The Detroit Titans men's track and field team got the season off in grand style winning three events, including setting two school records, on Friday night at the Blue & Gold Invitational at Notre Dame.

Junior Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) broke the record in the 60-meters with a 6.86, more than a .10 of a second faster than DePaul's Chris Kyles to win the event. The standard was held by Earle Lloyd with a 6.91 in 1984. He would also take fourth in the 200m in 22.71.

Junior Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) broke his own record in the 5000m running a tight race that saw him place third in 14:37.12.

Sophomore Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) moved into seventh place in school history in the 60-meter hurdles winning the race in a career best 8.47. Campbell also led a quartet of Titans that claimed the top four spots with freshmen Vincent Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland)  finishing second (8.87), Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) third (8.91) and Anthony Donald (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) fourth (9.38). Lefler would go on to be the top Titan in the 500m placing fifth in 1:09.54, a new UDM indoor rookie record.

Junior Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley), the Horizon League's defending champion in the indoor 400m, picked up off right where he left off in the indoor season winning the event in 48.93.

Junior Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine) also ran well with a personal record 15:28.20 for sixth in the 5000m, a time that is now 10th in the UDM record books, while sophomores Alex Vanias (Leroy, MI/Pine River) (15:40.94) and Derek Hoerman (Canton, MI/Canton) (15:58.20) posted new career marks for eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Sophomore Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) had a pair of top three efforts earning second in the 200m in 22.62 and third in the 60m with a career time of 7.03, a run that now stands third in Titan history. Also running well in those events was senior Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Wingate), who ran a 7.11 for fourth in the 60m and a 22.74 for sixth in the 200m.

That titan duo then teamed with senior Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit) and sophomore Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) in the 4x400-meter relay to a fifth-place finish in a time of 3:24.96.

One last fine debut performance on the day came from rookie Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin), who was leading the 800m at the halfway point before runners from Notre Dame, Marquette and DePaul caught up to him leaving in with a very impressive time of 2:00.15 for fifth place.

UDM will have one final race before the Christmas break as Detroit participates in the Grand Valley State Holiday Open in Allendale, MI, on Friday, Dec. 18.
