Kalkstein Takes Home Triple Jump Honors

Sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) had three top five efforts, including winning the triple jump, as the UDM women's track and field team competed at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday evening. 

Kalkstein won the event with a leap of 10.74m/35'3". She also earned fifth in the long jump with a 4.98m/16' 4.25" mark and was part of the fourth place 4x400-meter relay (Megan Miller, Kirstin Mooney, Jennifer DeFauw) that posted a time of 4:07.84. 

Freshman Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) was runner-up in the mile with a time of 5:29.08. Right behind her were three other Titans as rookie Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) took fourth in 5:32.12, freshman Katie Weishaar (Plymouth, MI/Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard) sixth in 5:33.66 and sophomore Kristina Arko (Euclid, OH/Euclid) ran a 5:49.89 for seventh place. 

UDM also had a good showing in the 600-meters as two runners climbed into the top 10 in school history. Senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) was the top finisher earning fourth in 1:39.41, good for sixth in UDM runs, while freshman Tressanique Hampton (Flint, MI/Southwestern Academy) was sixth in 1:39.99, a time that now ranks 10th at UDM. 

Junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling ON/St. Theresa Catholic) was just outside the top ten with a sixth-place finish in 1:41.30. Senior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) rounded out the team effort with a run of 1:43.25 for eighth place. 

The women's 500m proved to be a record machine on the night. Junior Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) set a December record with a time of 18:39.58 for 12th place. Freshman Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City) then placed 13th in a Titan rookie December record 18:43.14. Senior Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie) and sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) also set career times in the race as Gorzynska was 14th in 18:49.41, while Rossman took 17th crossing the end at 19:17.43. 

Rookie Brianna Soule (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) posted a 5.03m/16'6" in the long jump for third place, while also taking 15th in the 200m in 27.22. 

Freshman Sharonda Vesey (Westland, MI/Romulus) ran a season-best 9.74 in the preliminary 60-meter hurdles and finished the event with a 10.88 for 12th, while sophomore Amanda Campbell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) timed a new personal record of 10.06 in the prelims before taking 11th in 10.13. 

Sophomore Monica Betker (Mecosta, MI/Chippewa Hills) settled for a ninth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 2.60m/8'6". Freshman Melissa Zuteck (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) was ninth in the 400m in 1:03.02, while rookie Olivia Smid (Ann Arbor, MI/Whitmore Lake) was just in back of her finishing 10th with a 1:03.23. 

Freshman Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) was the top sprinter placing 14th in the 60m in 8.19 and 13th in the 200m with a 27.10. Classmate Nikia Duncan (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta) also fared well in the 200m claiming 16th in 27.29. 

The Titans will have more than three weeks of training before resuming the indoor season as the women will next take part in the BGSU Open on Saturday, Jan. 16.
