ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a fourth place finish from senior captain Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team finished took second with 55 points at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championship on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

The Eagles' streak of four consecutive MAC titles comes to an end, as preseason favorite Kent State University took home the team championship with 30 points. EMU took second with 55 points, followed by Central Michigan University (59 points), Miami University (95 points), University at Buffalo (147 points), Ohio University (182 points), University of Toledo (184 points), University of Akron (197 points), and Bowling Green State University (283 points).

"Kent State is very deserving of this year's MAC title," said EMU head coach John Goodridge. "That being said I remain very proud of my team in how they have developed and how hard they raced today."

Vollmar picked up first-team All-MAC accolades for the second year in a row, as his time of 25:57.5 was good for fourth place. Vollmar finished behind Kent State's Scott Hilditch (25:48.6), CMU's Riak Mabil (25:41.7), and individual champion Aiman Scullion from Kent State, who took home the top spot with a time of 25:32.7. Vollmar moved up two spots from his finish last year at the MAC Championship, but his time was over a minute slower from last year's time, which was a common theme in this year's league championship.

Redshirt freshman James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester) was the next EMU harrier to cross the finish line, taking ninth to earn second team All-MAC accolades with a time of 26:12.6.

Junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) earned second team All-MAC honors, as his time of 26:18.6 was good for 10th place.

Senior captain R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) was the next EMU harrier to cross the finish line, as he placed 15th overall with a time of 26:30.0.

True freshman Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington-Wellington-New Zealand) had a stellar performance in his first conference championship, as he placed 17th overall with a time of 26:35.5.

Sophomores Josh Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central-St. Francis) and Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) placed 32nd and 33rd, respectively this afternoon.
