ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team wrapped up action Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championship, as the Eagles placed sixth overall with 157 points.

The RedHawks from Miami University won the title with 44 points, followed by the University of Toledo (63 points), University of Akron (104 points), Central Michigan University (116 points), Kent State University (143 points), EMU (157), Bowling Green State  University (212 points), Northern Illinois University (218 points), Ohio University (218 points), Western Michigan University (250 points), Ball State University (269 points), and the University at Buffalo (317 points).

Toledo's Ari Fisher was the individual winner of the women's 6,000-meter event, as she finished with a time of 22:18.8.

"I am pleased that the team put themselves in good position early on and continued to battle throughout the race," said EMU head coach Sue Parks. "Our goal was to go into this meet with a championship attitude and I feel that our team did a great job of getting out hard and racing up towards the front early in the race."

True freshman Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) had another stellar performance to add to her already impressive freshman campaign, as Calka finished sixth overall with a time of 22:35.6 to earn first team All-MAC accolades for the first time.

"[Courtney] did an outstanding job in her first MAC Championship," Parks added. "She took the lead at the start and continued to hold it through over 2,000-meters.  When the others runners came up and challenged her, she did not back down and she continued to compete hard all the way to the finish."

Junior Beverly Elcock (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) was the next EMU harrier to cross the finish line, as she placed 22nd overall with a time of 23:30.0.

Sophomores Natalie Webb (Allen Park, Mich.-Woodhaven) and Rachel Hollinger-Janzen (Goshen, Ind.-Goshen) were the next two Eagles to cross the finish line, as they placed 36th and 44th, respectively.

Freshman Tiffany Kincaid (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) took 49th place with a time of 24:12.4, while senior Jackie Ellis (Lebanon, Ohio-Lebanon-Hope College) and Rachel Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) placed 58th and 62nd, respectively.
