YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team opened the 2010 season with impressive performances from both field athletes and runners at the EMU Open Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 9, at Bob Parks Track inside of Bowen Field House.

The Eagles took first place in five of the eight running events, while placing second in the one-mile and 3,000-meter runs, and third in the 60-meter hurdles. The Eagles were also dominant in the field, winning four of the six events.

Sophomore thrower Angela Scarber (Waterford, Mich.-Kettering) picked up first-place finishes for Eastern with a career-best toss of 52-02.50 in the weight throw, and another win with a throw of 41-07.00 in the shot put. Also in the field, Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) won the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-00.00, while Jasmine Gates (Virginia Beach, VA-Tallwood) and Brittany Lockhart (Canton, Mich.-Salem) shared first-place in the high jump with leaps of 5-05.00.

Ashlee Abraham (Southfield, Mich.-Renaissance) stormed out the gates in her first collegiate race. In the 60-meter dash, the freshman sprinter effortlessly coasted to a win, crossing the finish line in just 7.57 seconds. Her time was only .13 seconds shy of qualifying as a provisional for an NCAA Regional bid.

It was a clean one, two, three finish for the Eagles in the 800-meter run as Christina Farrow (Detroit, Mich.-Renaissance) won with a time of 2:16.72, Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) was just behind at 2:17.61 and Frederike Schoenfeld (Huenfelden, HE, Germany- Tilemannschule) rounded out the sweep, finishing in 2:17.90.

Like the 800, the women also swept the 400-meter dash. This time it was freshman Asia Rawls (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) winning in 56.91, sophomore Shantavia Williams (Homestead, Fla.-South Dade) finishing second in 59.53, and junior Dejaa Shearer (Canton, Ohio-Glen Oak) taking third-place in  59.78. Eastern's women were the only runners to finish in less than one minute.

Naomi Andre (Naples, Fla.-Golden Gate) also had a stellar debut outing, winning the 200-meter dash in impressive fashion with a time of 25.77.

The final win of the day came from the 4x400-meter relay team, running 3:57.29.

The non-scoring meet featured competition from Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois University, as well as the University of Detroit Mercy, Concordia University, Oakland University, Siena Heights University, the Mid-Michigan Track Club, cross-county rivals University of Michigan, and several unattached athletes.

The Eagles return to action Friday, Jan. 15, traveling to Allendale, Mich. for the Grand Valley “Mike Lints” Open.
