Gersham Named MAC Field Athlete of the Week

Record-setting performance earns senior conference honors

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - For his efforts in Eastern Michigan University's opening meet of the 2010 season, EMU senior Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield) earned the coveted Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the Mid-American Conference.

At the EMU Invitational this past Saturday at EMU's Bob Parks Track/Bowen Fieldhouse, Gersham competed in two events, taking first-place in both the shot put and the weight throw.

Gersham's shot put throw of 62-01.25 feet broke a four-year-old school record previously held by David Adamek in 2006. The throw also bested second place at the event by nearly 10 feet. Additionally, the mark was enough to make Gersham a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Regional Championship. In the weight toss, he also took first-place, throwing the 35-pound apparatus 58-06.50 feet.

Gersham, who was a MAC champion last year, will looking to improve on his record-setting throw this coming Friday, Jan. 15, when the Eagles return to competition in a quad meet at Bob Parks Track/Bowen Fieldhouse against Oakland University, University of Detroit Mercy and MAC foe Central Michigan University.

The meet begins at 6 p.m.
