Women’s Track Garners High Marks At BGSU

In its first full scored meet of the season, the Detroit Titans women's track and field team totaled 15 points and set six personal records as UDM finished ninth in the BGSU Challenge on Saturday afternoon. 

Junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville) had the best place on the day giving Detroit six points in the 400m with a 58.85 for third. 

Senior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) tallied four points for UDM in the 600m with a fifth-place finish in 1:40.45, nearly matching her career best. 

Calhoun and Miller would then team up with senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) and junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling ON/St. Theresa Catholic) in the 4x400-meter relay to take seventh in 4:07.82, giving the Titans another two points. 

Senior Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) had a pair of top 10 showings on the day scoring three points in the weight with a throw of 16.21m/53-02.25, good for sixth place, while taking 10th in the shot put with a heave of 11.83m/38-09.75.

The PR's were set by the distance group in the 3000-meters as six Titans broke their old mark. Freshman Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City) led the way with a time of 10:45.67 for 18th place. Junior Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) earned 21st in 10:50.32, while senior Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie) was 23rd in 10:57.02. Sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) posted an 11:06.22 for 28th and freshman Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) and sophomore Kristina Arko (Euclid, OH/Euclid) were 32nd and 40th in 11:12.20 and 11:28.92, respectively. 

In the 60m, Detroit had two runners make their debuts as junior Jasmin Webb (Detroit, MI/Mumford) was 10th in 8.11, while freshman Taylor Ragland (Columbus, OH/Whitehall-Yearling) was 15th in 8.33. Rookies Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) and Nikia Duncan (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta) also took part in the race with Hollern placing 14th with a time of 8.28 and Duncan 17th with a run of 8.43. Hollern would also place 18th in the 200m in 27.45 with Webb right with her at 27.46 for 20th. 

Freshman Whitney Rogers (Flint, MI/Hamady) tallied a top 20 performance in the 400m in 1:02.91 for 19th, while in the 800m, DeFauw claimed 12th in 2:23.68 and Mooney 18th in 2:27.08. 

Sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) made the finals in the triple jump earning ninth with a leap of 10.58m/34-08.50 and also claimed 12th in the long jump with a 4.95m/16-03.00 mark.

Detroit returns to action next weekend as the Titans take part in the two dame Simmons-Harvey Invitational at the University of Michigan. The event will start on Friday.
