Men and Women Finish First, Second, Respectively, at Chippewa Invite

- The Eastern Michigan University men's track squad finished first while the the women's team secured second place at the Chippewa Invitational in Mount Pleasant, Mich., Saturday, Jan. 30. The men posted a score of 162, besting second place Central Michigan University (151.5), third place Kent State University (108.5), and fourth place Oakland University (61). The women claimed second with a score of 111, while  CMU finished first (160), Western Michigan University was third (96), KSU was fourth (53.5) and OU finished last (5.5).


EMU senior Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield) earned 16 points for the Eagles after claiming a first-place mark in the shot put and a second-place finish in the weight throw. ReJeana Marigna (Beverly, N.J.-Burlington County Institute of Technology) also showed some heroics for the women as she earned first and second-place finishes in the 200 and 60-meter dashes, respectively, to earn 18 points for her squad.

Sophomore Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) scored in three events (200-meter dash, long jump, triple jump) en route to picking up 15 points for the Eagles' cause. Freshman Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) posted a time of 5:04.22 for an Eagle victory in the mile run. The Green and White also earned 24 of the 31 possibly points in the 200-meter dash.

For the men, Xavier Clais (Hanvillers, France) continued his dominance in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-10.25 feet for a victory and a 10-point contribution for EMU. Without junior sprinter Clint Allen (Muskegon, Mich.-Oakland View), who is hampered by injury, Koleon Prescott (Oakland, Calif.-Oakland Technical High School) filled the void with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash. Freshman Jairus Saunders also continued to impress, as the first-year stud galloped to a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.33 seconds.

Both the men and the women will be back in action Feb. 5-6 as the squads head to South Bend, Ind. to compete at Notre Dame's famed Meyo Invitational.
