Eagles Flys High at Famed Meyo Invitational

EMU's Men's T&F set multiple NCAA Qualifier Marks, while Women's T&F also has strong outing

- At one of the most prestigious Midwest meets during the indoor season, the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field squads showed why they are among the elite by placing high in various events at the two-day, 23rd Annual Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.


Freshman sensation Ashlee Abraham (Southfield, Mich.-Renaissance) finished fourth out of more than sixty runners in the 60-meter dash, posting a new personal best of 7.55 seconds. Fellow freshman Naomi Andre (Naples, Fla.-Golden Gate) and sophomore Ashley Wartley (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) finished back-to-back, 14th and 15th, in the 200-meter dash out of 68 runners.

ReJeana Marigna (Beverly, N.J.-Burlington County Institute of Technology) showed her speed as she sprinted to a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter dash, while Andre and Shantavia Williams (Homestead, Fla.-South Dade) also placed in the top-15. Asia Rawls (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) ran a personal best in the 400, which was also good for the team's second fastest time of the season in the event.

Shade St. Louis (Kansas City, Kan.-Eldorado Senior Comprehensive (Trinidad)) and Rawls finished third and fourth in the 500-meter dash for the Eagles, while Lauren Quaintance placed (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) 12th in the 800. The Eagles also placed sixth out of 27 teams in the 4x400-meter relay.

In the field events, Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) finished seventh among nearly 30 pole vaulters, and narrowly missed clearing the NCAA Provisional mark for the event. Sophomore Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) had a season-best long jump of 19-00.75 inches while thrower Angela Scarber (Waterford, Mich.-Kettering) had a career-best weight throw of 52-05.50 feet.

For the men, junior sprinter Clint Allen (Muskegon, Mich.-Oakland View) out ran his way to a third-place finish in the finals of the 60-meter dash, with his fastest time of 6.70. The mark was good enough to meet an NCAA Provisional Qulafying mark, as well as tying him for the 15th-fastest mark in the nation for this event. Akeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbados-Colleridge & Parry School) also finished well, claiming sixth-place out of the 60-plus runners in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.69 seconds. The winner and runner up in the 400 set the record for fastest times (45.55 and 45.78, respectively) in the country this year.

David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's) turned in the ninth-fastest one mile run in the nation as he narrowly missed eclipsing a 4:00 mile with a time of 4:00.89. The time makes Brent the first Eagle this year to reach an NCAA Automatic qualifier mark.

Blake Figgins (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford (University of Missouri)) paced himself for a 10th-place finish in the 800-meter run, just two seconds behind the race's winner, also hitting the NCAA Provisional mark.

Freshman Vanier Joseph finished second out of 36 runners in the 60-meter hurdles for Eastern in just his fourth collegiate meet. His time of 7.97 seconds was just shy of the provisional qualifier mark.

Both the men and the women will be back on the road Saturday, Feb. 13, as they head to Ohio for the Akron Invitational.
