Men's Track Has a Good First Day at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. ­(EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team turned in some strong performces here Friday, Feb. 12, in the first of two days of competition in the Grand Valley State University Big Meet.

Junior Ackeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbados-Colleridge and Parry School) was second in the 200-meter dash in an NCAA Provisional time of 21.63 and also hit a provisional time in the 400-meters, finishing in fourth at 48.22. Gerald Gersham, a senior from Southfield, was second in the shot put at 58-feet-2.5 inches.

Two Eagles hit NCAA automatic times in the meet. David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's) was second in the 800-meter run in 1:50.04 while teammate Blake Figgins (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) was fifth in 1:50.54, both automatic qualifiers.

Senior Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central) finished fourth in the 600-meter run in 1:22.09 and teammate Kyle Fortin (Fairview, Mich.-Fairview Area) followed in 1:22.32. Senior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) was 10th in the mile in 4:08.43.

EMU's Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) was 22nd in the 5,000 meters in 14:46.65 while teammate Matt Hammersmith (Wolcotville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) finished 69th in 15:35.78.

Other place finishers for the Eagles in Friday's action were Xavier Clais (Hanvilliers, France) who tied for seventh in the high jump at 6-feet-6.25 inches while in the 200 meters, Koleon Prescott (Oakland, Calif.-Oakland Tech) was fifth in 21.78 and Jairus Saunders was 26th in 22.59.

EMU's men will continue action at Grand Valley Saturday while several runners will also compete at the University of Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
