Vintevoghel’s Top 10 Finish Leads UDM At GVSU Big Meet

The Detroit Titans women's track and field team returned home from the Grand Valley State Big Meet with some fine efforts on Saturday.

Freshman Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City) had the best run on the day, taking sixth in the 5000-meters in a career-best 18:18.96, a time that ranks 10th in Titan history.

Also finishing with good times in the race was junior Kristie Ferrans' (Carleton, MI/Monroe) 20th place tally in 18:50.78, while sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) earned 24th in a PR 19:03.67. Senior Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie) placed 32nd with a time of 19:30.34 and sophomore Kristina Arko (Euclid, OH/Euclid) posted a personal record 19:42.46 for 34th.

The distance runners also shined in the distance medley relay as the freshman quartet of Katie Weishaar (Plymouth, MI/Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard), Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central), Tressanique Hampton (Flint, MI/Southwestern Academy) and Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) took ninth in a UDM rookie record 13:19.52. 

Hampton came back for 18th in the 800m in 2:20.72, while junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling ON/St. Theresa Catholic) placed 26th with a 2:22.45 run.

Senior Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) recorded an indoor PR in the shot put, earning 11th with a throw of 13.39m/43-11.25. She was also 16th in the weight with a heave of 16.57m/54-04.50.

The women did have Detroit top 10 performance in Canada as junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville) moved to third in the 300m with a 41.99 time at the Windsor Team Challenge.

The Titans will have one last meet before hosting the HL Indoor Championships as Detroit will participate in the Silverston Invitational, held at the Michigan Indoor Track on Saturday.
