MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — After one day of competition at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men are currently in second place with 38 total points, while the women sit in the ninth spot with nine points and multiple events left for day two.
Sophomore Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) scored six huge points for the women by leaping to a season-best 19-04.00 feet in the long jump. The mark was the second best jump of her career.
The quartet of Morgan Churchwell (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central), Lauren Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), Shade St. Louis (Kansas City, Kan.-Eldorado Senior Comprehensive (Trinidad)), and Natalie Webb (Allen Park, Mich.-Woodhaven) picked up the other three points for the women as the team earned a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay in a time of 12:07.87.
Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) picked up his first MAC Title in the 5,000-meter run as he crossed the finish line in 14:33.17 to pick up 10 points for the Eagles. Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield) notched a second-place finish in the weight throw for the men, as he tossed the second best mark in EMU history in the event. His toss of 63-10.25 feet is also a career-best mark for the senior.
The men's distance medley team also picked up a first-place finish for a MAC Title in the event.
Other point scorers for the men were Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germany / Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) in the long jump, while Terefe Ejigu (New Zealand) and R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run to round out the scoring.
Day two of the MAC Championship will take place Saturday, Feb. 27 as the finals of the sprints and the mile run will highlight the day.
