Titan Men Third, Women Fifth After Day One of HL Championships

Complete Day One Results: Men --- Women

Day Two Meet Program

After day one of action at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships the UDM men are currently in third place, while the women are tied for fifth. The men were led by a pair of third-place finishes from sophomore Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) in the long jump and junior Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) in the 5,000 meter run, and the women were led by a second-place finish in the weight throw from senior Brittany Horne (Okemos, Mi/Okemos).

Milwaukee, the defending league champion for the both the men and women, holds the lead in both after day one. The UWM men are outdistancing their closest competition by 32 points and the women are out front by 46. The Titan men accumulated 20 points Saturday and the women put up 12.

Horne recorded the best finish in a final for the Titans on the indoor championship's opening day, uncorking a toss a 56 feet, 10 inches – a new personal best - in the weight throw to place second. In the women's long jump, sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) was just one centimeter away from reaching the finals as she jumped to a PR of 17' 3.5”.

Detroit qualified two women for tomorrow's finals on the track. Senior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) ran a 60.26 second 400 meter race to qualify as the No. 7 seed, and in the 800 meter race senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) raced to a PR of 2:19.65, also the seventh-best performance in qualifying.

“The women competed well,” said head coach Guy Murray. “Getting Megan (Miller) into the final was big, and Brittany (Horne) had a great throw and was leading right until the very last throw. I think we really responded to the competition nicely.”

Landrum leapt to a PR of 22' 8.5” in the long jump, while Liederbach clocked a time of 14:37.54 for 25 laps around the oval. Also earning points for the Titans on Saturday was freshman Ja'Quan Patterson (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti), who took fourth in the long jump, recording a mark of 22' 2.25”.

Landrum's day was far from over following the long jump. Landrum was part of a pack of four Titans to qualify for the finals in the 60 meter dash. Junior Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) led Detroit's 60 meter contingent, clocking a time of 6.83 seconds and setting a new Horizon League championship meet record. Right behind was Landrum in 6.93 seconds, collecting another PR, followed by senior Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Winans Academy) who qualified with the fourth seed (7.04 seconds) and senior Samuel Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit) who posted the eighth-fastest time in the qualifying heats (7.20 seconds).

Three speedsters will represent Detroit in Sunday's 200 meter final, led by Landrum, who won his heat in a time of 22.86 seconds. Also in are junior Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley), who qualified with a time of 22.27 seconds, and Cleary, who finished in 22.85 seconds. Hanna also posted the top qualifying time in the 400 meter dash, in which he is the reigning champion, cruising to a time of 50.33 seconds.

Another top-qualifier for Detroit was senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock), who ran his way to a time of 1:56:20 in the 800 meter run. Teammate freshman Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) ran down to the wire but missed qualifying for 800 meter final by less than one second.

And with three events remaining the men's heptathlon, freshman Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) sits in 10th place with fellow UDM rookie Anthony Donald (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) sitting sixth. This year marks the first time the Titans have been represented in the seven-discipline event. Hennrick led the field early as he scored a PR of 7.45 seconds while breaking the tape in the 60 meter dash.

Concluding the day's action was the distance medley relay, where the Titans placed fourth on both sides. The UDM men crossed the line in a time of 10:36.32 while the women finished in 13:01.62.
Sunday kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with the final three events of the men's heptathlon.
