Horne Throws For Meet Victory, New Titan Record in Hammer

Full Meet Results (HTML)

Senior thrower Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) racked up top-8 finishes in three throwing disciplines as the University of Detroit Mercy opened its outdoor track and field season in Cincinnati, OH, at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational Saturday, but had her best showing of the day in the hammer throw where her mark of 188 feet, seven inches was not only good enough to win the meet, but also established a new UDM record.

The Titan women placed seventh out of 15 teams in the scored meet, tallying 44 points throughout the day. Host Cincinnati topped the podium in the team standings, amassing 132.33 points.

Horne's hammer throw shattered the previous school record of 177-9 set by Andrea Karpala in 2005. But the senior was only getting started, throwing for another personal record in the discus, taking fourth place with a toss of 140-6, and her mark of 43-3 in the shot put was good enough for seventh place.

Also scoring for the Titans in multiple events was sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell). Kalkstein waited until her last attempt at the triple jump to do it, but soared to anew PR with a mark of 37-4.5, which stood up for second place in the meet. On the track, the sophomore crossed the line in the 400 meters in 1:01.29 for seventh place.

Finishing just ahead of Kalkstein in the 400 meters was teammate junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville), who crossed the line fourth in 58.26 seconds. Calhoun would also anchor the 4x100 meter relay squad that included senior Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw), junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) and freshman Nikia Duncan (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta), finishing seventh in 50.84 seconds.

Detroit's 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kalkstein, Mooney, freshman Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) and Duncan clocked a time of 4:02.35, taking fourth place.

And in the 400 meter hurdles race, freshman Olivia Smid (Ann Arbor, MI/Whitmore Lake) made her UDM debut, finishing fifth in a time of 1:06.29.

The Titans will be busy from here on out, competing every weekend between now and May 15. Next on the slate for the Titans will be a trip to Lewisburg, PA, on Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, where they will compete at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
