On Saturday, it was time to go fast in Lewisburg, PA, at the Bison Outdoor Classic track meet. After the Titans competed in the distance events Friday night, the sprinters took to the oval against competition from over 50 other schools, and Detroit runners raced their way to several heat victories in the unscored meet.
UDM rookie
Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) was the first across the line in her heat of the women's 100 meter dash, stopping the clock at 12.85 seconds, with teammate and fellow freshman
Nikia Duncan (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta) right on her heels at 12.93 seconds. Duncan wasn't on anybody's heels in the 200 meter dash, winning her heat in a time of 27.54 seconds.
In the 400 meter dash, junior
Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville), no stranger to breaking the tape, was out in front of everyone during her heat to post a time of 58.56 seconds. Senior
Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) also took part in the single-lap race, timing in at 60.40 seconds.
Calhoun, Duncan and Hollern were joined by senior
Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) in the 4 x 100 meter relay, taking top honors in their heat in 50.50 seconds.
Schinske was also in action off the track, where she opened the day for the Titans in the long jump, recording a distance of 15 feet, 4.25 inches. Also in the sand pit, sophomore
Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) soared to a new personal best in the triple jump of 37-9.
Detroit will be in action twice over the next week, beginning Thursday when the Titans make their lone home appearance of the outdoor season, hosting Oakland University for a dual meet beginning at 4:00 p.m. UDM will then stay nearby on Friday and Saturday, taking part in the EMU Twilight meet in Ypsilanti.
