Senior Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) won three events and seniors Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie), Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) and Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) all had runner-up efforts as the Titans were narrowly defeated by Oakland, 94-89, in the 5th Annual Detroit-Oakland Dual on Thursday at Titan Field.

“It was a fun day and it's always great to host a combined event,” said head coach Guy Murray. “It was too bad the wind was in the wrong direction or we would have had some really great times today.”

The day was full of excitement as all five seniors, Horne, Gorzynska, Miller, Schinske and Chantel Henry, were honored with Senior Day presentations. Children took part of the action in the Tommy Titan-Golden Grizzly kid's race and older fans got involved in the running of the open mile.

“It was great to see the seniors out there competing and enjoying themselves in their final home meet,” added Murray.

In the main event, Horne led the way winning the hammer (55.90m/183”05), discus (38.30m/125”08) and shot put (11.82m/38”09.50).

Miller helped the 4x400 team of Hampton, freshman Olivia Smid (Ann Arbor, MI/Whitmore Lake) and junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling ON/St. Theresa Catholic) to first in a time of 4:03.17, while also finishing second in the 400m with a run of 59.57.

Schinske earned second in the javelin with a throw of 28.90m/94”10 as well as the heptathlon totaling 3,758 points, while Gorzynska took runner-up in the steeplechase with a personal record 12:15.57.

Freshman Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) won the 200-meters in 26.93 and was second in the 100m in 12.87. Junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville) won the 400m in 58.74, while freshman Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) claimed the top spot in the 800m with a 2:23.532 to edge out rookie teammate Tressanique Hampton (Flint, MI/Southwestern Academy) (2:23.535). Also winning individually on the day was sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) who jumped 11.42m/37”05.75' in the triple.

The 4x100m quartet of Calhoun, Hollern, Kalkstein and freshman Sharonda Vesey (Westland, MI/Romulus) was the last victor on the day defeating its OU counterpart in a time of 4:03.17.

Mooney was second in the 400-meter hurdles clocked at 1:07.41, while Smid placed second in the high jump clearing 1.45m/4”09.00'.

Detroit will continue its busy week by competing in the EMU Twilight this weekend.
