School Record in Distance Medley Relay Highlights Titans Day at Penn

Penn Relays Schedule & Results

Hillsdale "GINA" Relays Schedule & Results

With the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field squad separated between the Penn Relays and the Hillsdale “GINA” Relays, the Titans distance medley relay squad of senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park), junior Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley), junior Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic) and junior Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) ran its way to a new school record at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Gould, Hanna, Mahler and Liederbach got the baton across the finish line more than one second under the previous top time in the UDM records books. Gould opened the race with 1200 meter leg in 3:05. After that, Hanna completed his 400 meter leg in 47.3 seconds and was followed by a 1:54.4 800 meter effort from Mahler. In the final leg Liederbach, who ran the 5,000 meters in 14:38.88 Thursday night, ran 4:10.9 over the final 1600 for the top spot in Titan history.

Senior Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Winans Academy), senior Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit), junior Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) and sophomore Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) were the busiest Titans, competing in three relays each.

The foursome competed as a singe unit in both 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. In the 4x100 their time of 42.80 seconds was good enough to make its way into the Titan record books as the seventh-fastest time in school history, and they came back to clock a time of 1:29.58 in the 4x200 race.

Osayande and Jones later teamed up with Mahler and senior Kevin Wozniak (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) for the 4x400 meter relay. The squad started in lane one in their heat, and had to face the unusual task of cutting to the outside rather than inside due to a short inside track at Franklin Field, but still put forth a very solid 3:29.61 effort.

In the final event for the Titans at Penn Friday, the sprint medley relay team of Landrum, Cleary, Hanna and freshman Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) clocked a 3:30.18. Landrum and Cleary clocked 200 meter legs in 22.3 and 22.7, respectively, and were followed by a 47.7 second 400 from Hanna before Smalley covered the final 800 meters in 1:57.6.

Meanwhile, closer to home, freshman Anthony Donald (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) took the track for the 110 meter hurdles at the Hillsdale “GINA” Relays, where he clocked a new personal best time of 55.60 seconds, good for 12th place. Also competing at Hillsdale Friday was freshman Ja'Quan Patterson (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) who, despite scratching on his first two attempts, recorded a jump of 6.40m/21'-0" in his final attempt of the long jump to take eighth place.

UDM has a full day of action on Saturday at Hillsdale, where freshman Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) will be the first Titan in action as he competes in the javelin which kicks off at noon. And Detroit will have its final relay squad in action at the Penn Relays, as the 4x800 meter relay team of Smalley, Gould, Mahler and Wozniak get underway at 4:20 p.m.
