Titan Men Conclude Weekend at Penn, Hillsdale

Penn Relays Results

Hillsdale "GINA" Relays Results

The Titans wrapped up their busiest weekend of the season on Saturday afternoon as the men's track and field team was at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA, running in the 4x800 meter relay, and also competing in the Hillsdale “GINA” Relays in Hillsdale, MI.

In the third and final day of action at Penn for UDM, the 4x800 team of junior Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic), senior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park), freshman Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) and senior Kevin Wozniak (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) clocked a time of 7:52.66 in front an event record crowd over 54,000 strong. The time was good for the No. 8 spot in the Detroit record books. Mahler led off in 1:56.70, followed by Gould (1:56.20), Smalley (2:00.45) and Wozniak, who brought the Titans home with an 800 meter leg of 1:59.00.

Over in Hillsdale, freshman Vincent Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland) led the UDM men's squad at the “GINA” Relays, where he raced to a time 15.47 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles, good for a ninth-place finish. Fellow rookie Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) was close behind Lefler, running a time of 15.97 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles, and was also in action in the javelin throw. Hennrick fouled on his first two attempts, but uncorked a throw of 39.70m/130'-03” on his final attempt, good enough for 20th place.

Junior Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) led a foursome of Titans in the 1,500 meter run at Hillsdale, placing 22nd in 4:02.43. Also running in the event were sophomore Bob Radlich (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) who ran 4:06.78, freshman Edwin Gay (Grosse Pointe, MI/GP South) who finished in 4:07.43, and junior Brian Greenhoe (Sand Lake, MI/Grant) who clocked a time of 4:21.22.

The relay meets were the Titans final tune-ups before heading to the conference championships meet. The 2010 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago will get underway Friday, April 30 on the campus of Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.
