Titan Women Look for Strong Finish at Outdoor Championships

2010 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships Results

A young University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field squad heads to Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, this weekend for the 2010 Horizon League Outdoor Championships hosted by Loyola University and the University of Illinois-Chicago. Action gets underway Friday, beginning with the multi-events and continues through Sunday.

The Titan women earned a fourth-place team finish at the 2009 outdoor championships, and were seventh at the indoor championships in February.

Detroit will be led by senior thrower Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos), who will be competing in the hammer throw, discus throw and shot put. Horne, the defending outdoor league champion in the hammer, has had an impressive spring in the event thus far. Last weekend, Horne became the first Titan ever to win an event at the Penn Relays with her hammer victory, and on April 3 she set a new UDM record with a throw of 188' 7”. Horne also enters the weekend ranked fifth in the league in the shot put, in which she was last spring's HL runner-up, and seventh in the discus.

“We'll be looking for Brittany to earn us some points in the hammer of course, where she's the defending champ, and hope that she can get us some big points in the other throws with some good performances as well,” said UDM head coach Guy Murray. “I think the big thing for us, having such a young team, will be to finish the season on a positive note, rise to the challenge and finish strong.”

In addition to Horne, Murray and the Titans will be looking for team points from junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville), who leads the Horizon League with a time of 57.55 seconds in the 400 meter dash, which she accomplished at the Hillsdale “GINA” Relays last weekend. Calhoun was also a member of Detroit's 4x400 meter relay squad that clocked a 4:03.17 during the UDM-OU Dual on April 14, which stands as the third-best in the conference.

Detroit's 4x100 meter relay squad posted a time of 49.66 seconds at its dual with Oakland, the No. 5 time in the conference.

Junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) heads into the meet with fifth-best showing in the 400 meter hurdles, 1:06.00 run at the “GINA” Relays. Senior Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) and sophomore Amanda Campbell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) are ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, in the heptathlon, and junior Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) has the No. 6 time in the league in the 10,000 meter run, a 39:09.60.

The Championships kick-off at 2:30 p.m. Friday, and you can check out updated results throughout the weekend right here.
