Titan senior thrower Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) recorded a personal best by almost 10 feet en route to winning the discus throw Saturday at the 2010 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Loyola University and the University of Illinois-Chicago at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, while five Titan runners advanced out of the prelims and into Sunday's final in their events.

Detroit accumulated 13 points during day two of competition, and sits in sixth place heading into the last day. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the leader heading in the final day of action with 76 points.

"A lot of things went right for us today," said Detroit head coach Guy Murray. "We got a big PR from Brittany (Horne) which was great to see. Overall it was just a good start for us here and we need to come back and keep it up tomorrow."

Horne, who entered the championships ranked seventh in the Horizon League in the discus, uncorked a throw of 44.04 meters/144' 6” to take top honors and earn 10 team points, and has now earned All-Horizon League distinction in three events outdoors. The throw also moved her up to No. 3 all-time in UDM history.

After beginning competition Friday, senior Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) and sophomore Amanda Campbell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) were back in action Saturday morning to for the final three events of the heptathlon. Both came within striking distance of their previous personal bests, as Schinske's total of 4,082 points was just 18 shy of her own school record and Campbell's 3,242 points was 50 points off her PR. Schinske was the top Detroit competitor in the seven-discipline event, taking seventh place, and Campbell was eighth.

In the long jump finals, sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) recorded a season best to make it into the finals, and then went beyond that, setting a new PR of 5.83 meters/17' 8”, and adding two points to Detroit's team score. The final team point of the day for the Titans came from senior Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Marzurski of Olsztynie). In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Gorzynksa clocked the fifth-fastest time in UDM history of 11:54.40, setting a massive PR and crossing the line in sixth place.

UDM qualified a pair of runners for Sunday's finals in both the 400 meter dash and the 400 meter hurdle finals. In the flat 400, junior Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville) won her heat with the fastest time in the prelims of 57.60 seconds. Senior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) also punched her ticket into the finals, clocking a time of 59.35 seconds. In the 400 meter hurdles junior Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) and freshman Olivia Smid (Ann Arbor, MI/Whitmore Lake) tallied PRs of 65.52 and 66.04, respectively, to advance to Sunday.

The final qualifier for the Titans was freshman Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central), who will be running in Sunday's 100 meter dash after clocking 12.68 seconds to nab the last remaining spot.

Ample opportunities to tally up team points lie ahead for the Titans. In the field events, Horne will be throwing in both the hammer and shot put finals, and Kalkstein has yet to go in the triple jump. In the 1,500 meter run, rookies Tressanique Hampton (Flint, MI/Southwestern Academy), Katie Weishaar (Plymouth, MI/Ann Arbor Grabriel Richard) and Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) will all toe the starting line, and Gorzynksa will be part of a five-Titan contingent in the 5,000 meter run. Detroit will also send out squads for the both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.

After finishing fourth last spring, the Detroit will look to climb from its current spot as the 2010 outdoor championships conclude Sunday. Action gets underway at 11:00 a.m. beginning with men's shot put, and action on the track heats up at noon with 4x100 meter relays.
