Men's Track Posts Successful Weekend at Owens Track Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – At the 25th Annual Jesse Owens Track Classic at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, this past weekend, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team showed the Midwest region that it can compete with the best of them.

With seven top-10 finishes, the Eagles also shattered three Mid-American Conference season-bests as freshman sensation Terefe Ejigu, and speedy seniors Ackeem Forde and David Brent each demolished standing conference bests this year.

In the 5,000-meter run, Ejigu, hailing from New Zealand, finished third out of 57 runners and finished in a time of 14:19.64. The previous high in the MAC this year was teammate Austin Hendrix's time of 14:36.35 at the Hillsdale Relays one week earlier. Ejigu's mark was also nearly 11 seconds better than the second-best MAC finisher in the race as Kent State's Aiman Scullion crossed in a time of 14:30.57.

Brent's time also shattered the previous MAC-best as he finished second in the 30-man race by posting a time of 8:50.04. The previous best time was 9:06.98. In Forde's case, his time of 47.41 in the 400-meter dash was less than one second better than the best time in the MAC this year, a 48.10 finish by Kent State University's Brandon Bailey. Forde finished fifth in the race.

Another freshman, hurdler Vanier Joseph, also had a top MAC finish as he placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 14.26 was just .05 seconds off of the fastest time in the conference this year.

The Eagles will finish the regular season with an appearance at the Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich on May 7-8.
