Buffalo, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) David Brent, Curtis Vollmar and Matt Hammersmith scored a combined 19 huge points for the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team on Friday, May 14, as the second day of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship concluded.

The Eagles currently sit in fifth place with 39 points, looking up at fourth-place Central Michigan (41.5 points), third-place Buffalo (52 points), second place Kent State (66 points) and the leader Akron (81.5 points).

The three Eagle runners—Brent, Vollmar and Hammersmith—finished first, second and eighth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, helping Eastern to more than double its total points from day one of the event. The seniors Brent and Vollmar crossed the line at nearly the same time, as Brent finished in 9:00.02 and Vollmar followed at 9:00.08. The six-hundredths of a second margin of victory was even slimmer than the time separating first and second place in the 100-meter dash. The title marked Brent's seventh in his storied career at EMU.

Also scoring for the Green and White were Oliver Walther in the long jump and Gerald Gersham in the shot put. Each athlete picked up two points with seventh place finishes.

A host of other runners moved on to the finals after scoring top times in preliminary races. Clint Allen ran a 10.52 100-meter dash to advance, while Ackeem Forde ran the fastest 400-meter dash and Vanier Joseph had the best 100-meter hurdle time. Each, along with other finals qualifiers, will try to make up the 49.5 point deficit and help Eastern claim its 21st MAC Championship during tomorrow's conclusion.

During day one, freshman #Terefe Ejigu#, who holds the conference's fastest time in the 5,000-meter run this year, took home his first MAC Title as the New Zealander won the 10,000-meter race in 30:01.17 to claim 10 points for the Green and White.

Other scorers were #R. P. White#, also in the 10,000-meter run (seventh place), and #Joseph Tesner#, in the pole vault (eighth place). #Adam McMillian# and #Andrew Meyer# participated in the pole vault and the hammer throw, respectively, but did not score.
