CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior trackster Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germany-Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 16. It marks the third time during the 2009-10 campaign that he has received the honor.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Walther, who holds a 3.90 GPA as an international business major, was named first team All-MAC with an individual title in the Triple Jump with a mark of 48-05.25. He also finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 22-05.75.
In dramatic come-from-behind fashion, the EMU men's track and field team did what it had done 20 times previous, as it captured another MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, May 15, in Buffalo N.Y. The title, Eastern's 21st in the 36 years in which the MAC has awarded it, also gives the Eagles the first Indoor-Outdoor sweep in the MAC since 2007 when it was again the Green and White taking home both titles.
