Brent Finishes 13th as Eagles Close at Regionals

Senior runner falls just short of advancing to NCAA Finals in 3k steeplechase

Greensboro, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) David Brent fell .04 seconds short in his quest to make it to the NCAA National Championship final in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the senior finished one spot out of an automatic bid at Regional in Greensboro, N.C.

Under the new rules for advancement this year, the runners in the 3k steeplechase were seeded at random in three heats. The top three runners in each heat advanced to the semi-finals automatically, while the next three best times also advanced to the semi-finals in Eugene, Ore. Brent's time of 8:47.93 was good for 13th overall and fourth in his heat. Despite it being his fastest time this season in the event, Brent missed out on qualifying as the third place finisher in his heat finished in 8:47.89. Curtis Vollmar also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing 38th with a time of 9:21.45.


In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the foursome of Ackeem Forde, Clint Allen, Koleon Prescott and Jairus Saunders finished 19th with a mark of 40.24. The time the seventh best in their heat.


The women's 4x100-meter team barely missed advancing to Oregon as well, as Ashlee Abraham, Naomi Andre, ReJeana Marigna and Margaret White placed 17th with a time of 45.38.


Just one day after advancing to the semi-finals in the 110-meter hurdles, freshman Vanier Joseph failed to qualify for the finals as he crossed the line in 14.24, 23rd place.


The final Eagle competitor was freshman distance runner Courtney Calka. In the 5,000-meter run, Calka turned out a solid performance by placing 29th in the field of 46 runners. Her time was 17:07.83.
