Horne Earns Team MVP Honors

Senior Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) took home MVP honors in both the indoor and outdoor season for the second straight year as the Titan track and field program gave out its yearly awards.

Horne started the track season by posting two-thirds of the Titan points at the Horizon League Indoor Championships. She took third in the shot put, and was a second team All-League performer after finishing runner-up in the weight. She then took the conference by storm during the outdoor season by being named the Horizon League Outstanding Field Event Performer after winning the hammer and discus at the outdoor meet. She won the hammer in a school and conference record toss of 61.30m/201' 1” and was ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA East Region. She then went on to claim 14th at the NCAA Preliminary Round Championships. During the outdoor campaign, she also became the first Titan in school history to win an event at the Penn Relays taking first in the Championship of America hammer throw with a heave of 56.92m/186'8".

The Coach's Award for both seasons was earned by senior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville). Miller scored for Detroit in the HL indoor 400-meters by taking sixth and then she helped the 4x400-meter relay to a third-place showing at the conference outdoor championships.

The Student-Athlete honor was split as senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) was awarded the accolade in the indoor season in her final campaign running for the red, white and blue, while sophomore Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) took home the honor during the outdoor year. DeFauw, who holds a 3.85 GPA in mathematics with a teacher education and a psychology minor, helped the distance medley relay team score with a fourth-place finish at the indoor championships as well as posting a PR in the 800m for a seventh-place finish. She was tabbed the HL Track Athlete of the Week (Dec. 22) after putting her name in the Titan record books with a fourth-place finish in the 600m in 1:39.41 at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open, a time that now stands sixth in school history.

Kalkstein, 3.98 GPA student in English Literature, scored at the outdoor league championships earning fifth in the triple jump with a personal record 11.51m/37”9.25' mark, a leap that stands fourth in school history. She also helped the 4x100 to a fourth-place finish. In the indoor HL track meet, she took seventh in the triple and ninth in the long and was named the conference's Field Athlete of the Week (Dec. 22) after winning the triple (10.74m) as well as claiming fifth in the long jump (4.98m).

The women's team had many new faces this year and three freshmen earned the Rookie of the Year Award. The indoor accolade was split between Amanda Hollern (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) and Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City). Hollern saw her times improve all season long hitting a PR in the 60m at the Silverstone Invite (8.09) before nearly setting that a week later by taking 13th in the indoor championships with a time of 8.10. She also was on the fourth place 4x100m team that scored at the league meet. Vintevoghel put her name in the top 10 of the UDM record books with a time of 18:18.96 in the 5000m, a run good for 10th place. She also took 13th at the indoor meet in that event and posted a PR in the 3000m with a runner-up effort in 10:35.92 at the GVSU Open.

The Most Improved Award was given just in the outdoor season and that honor went to sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia). The distance runner demolished her PR in the 5000m by nearly 40 seconds from a year ago dropping it all the way down to 19:09.18 at the EMU Twilight.
