Cleary, Hanna & Landrum Share Team MVP Honors

Conference titles, all-league performers and event winners highlight the team MVP honors for the Detroit Titans men's track and field team.

The indoor MVP award went to junior Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale), who set a new Horizon League Championships record in the 60-meters with a time of 6.89. That mark was achieved after posting a 6.83 in the preliminaries. During the indoor season, he broke a 26-year old school record in the 60m and ran under the old UDM record in six of eight races and finished in the top three in all but one race.

The outdoor honor was shared between junior Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley) and sophomore Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary). Hanna rebounded from an injury early in the outdoor season to take runner-up honors in the 400m as well as the high jump at the HL meet. His time of 47.37 put him in the top 50 in the NCAA East Region and he would later improve that to 47.16 at the Georgia Tech Invitational. He ultimately was selected to participate at the NCAA Preliminary Round Championships in the East Region and finished 45th overall with a time of 48.07.

Landrum was steady for Detroit all season long scoring in the 200m and the 4x100 at the league outdoor championships. He set career records in the 100 and 200m as well as the high jump and played a huge role in the Titan men's team victory over Oakland in the 5th Annual UDM-OU Dual. He won four events (100m, 200m, long jump, 4x100m) with a meet and stadium record of 6.80m/22”03.75' in the long jump. Landrum was also the recipient of the indoor Student-Athlete Award as the Titan sprinter holds a 3.45 GPA in business. In the indoor season, Landrum earned second-team All-Horizon League accolades in the 60m with a PR of 6.92.

The outdoor Student-Athlete Award honor went to Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine), a 3.45 student in biology. He placed 14th in the in the 5000m at the Oregon Twilight and was ninth in the 10000m and 16th in the 5000m at Horizon League Outdoor Championships. He also won the 3000m at the UDM-OU Dual in 9:06.65 and his 10000m time of 32:04.32 at Bucknell was the fifth best mark in Titan history.

Seniors Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) and Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit) were selected as the Coach's Award winners for the indoor and outdoor season, respectively. Just like in cross country, Gould eclipsed personal records during the season and scored for UDM in the 800m and on the distance medley relay at the league championships. He also posted the third-fastest Titan mile of all-time running a 4:11.85 at the Alex Wilson Invitational, improving his career record by 18 seconds as well as clocking a PR in all but his race during the year.

Jones earned All-HL honors by helping the outdoor 4x100 to a runner-up effort at the conference meet and ran on Titan relays at the prestigious Penn Relays.

Just like the women, three Titans were named Rookie of the Year. It was split during the indoor campaign as Vincent Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland) and Ja'Quan Patterson (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) both excelled in their first collegiate campaign. Both accounted for scoring in the indoor league meet as Lefler took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, a mark that stands eighth in the Titan record book, while Patterson was fourth in the long and eighth in the triple jump. In outdoors, Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) was the recipient as the rookie totaled a UDM record 5,054 points in the HL decathlon. Even more impressive was that it was his debut in the event.

Sophomore Bob Radlich (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) earned the Most Improved Award for the indoor season, while junior Brian Greenhoe (Sand Lake, MI/Grant) was tabbed the Titan most improved in outdoors. Radlich, who redshirted a year ago, was 14th in the indoor mile and ran a leg on the DMR that came in fourth to score. He also posted PR's in the 1000m and mile during season. Greenhoe's dedication during his career has driven him to come a long way as he placed in the top 25 in the league in the 1500m and the steeplechase. The steeple run, which earned him 11th, was a career best by 40 seconds and the ninth best tally by a UDM runner.

The comeback Award was given just for the indoor season and that honor went to junior Ryan Ayala (Coopersville, MI/Coopersville). After missing the season opening meets in December, he came back to set career marks in the mile, 3000 and 500m on the season and took 11th in the 3000 and 17th in the 5000m at the Horizon League Indoor Championships. His indoor PR's rank him #9 in 3000m and #8 in 5000m in school history.
