Matt Hammersmith Named Captain for 2010 Season

2010 Men's Cross Country Captain Matt Hammersmith

The senior runner was named Most Improved in the MAC in 2009

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University men's cross country coach John Goodridge announced senior runner Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) as the team captain for the 2010 campaign.

Hammersmith, who redshirted his freshman year in 2006, is returning for his final season of competition after being named the most improved runner on the team and in the conference in 2009. Hammersmith also garnered Second Team All Mid-American Conference honors as well as Academic All-MAC recognition during his junior campaign.

"Senior Matt Hammersmith is a great choice to be our team captain," said Goodridge. "He has been a very dedicated trainer throughout his career at EMU. He was the most improved cross country runner in the conference last year, having improved his MAC Cross Country Championship performance from 61st place in 2008 to 10th place last year."

"After having won four consecutive MAC Cross Country Team Championships and placing second last year, we hope very much to bring the conference championship back to Ypsilanti. Our 2010 schedule gives our alumni and fans quite a few opportunities to support this effort as most of our meets are very close to home."

Last season Hammersmith also helped the Eagles claim the title at the Titan Invitational by finishing with  a time of 20:49. He also finished with a time of 25:39 at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 18 and ran a time of 25:17 at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 2, helping EMU to a third place finish in its division.

The Eagles' season kicks off on Sept. 11 at the Running Fit Detroit Titan Invite in Northville, Mich. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
