Off the strength of two runners in the top 100, the UDM women's cross country team claimed 17th place at the annual National Catholic Championships, held on a 5k portion of the Notre Dame golf course.
Detroit finished with 541 points on the day.
“Overall, it was an okay day, but we were hoping for a bit more,” said head coach Guy Murray. “It was tough coming off the course last week and turn around on a short week, especially this early when we haven't backed off training. It was also a better field this year.”
UDM was led by sophomore
Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City), who shaved 14 seconds of last year's run to place 80th in 19:40. Vintevoghel has now led Detroit in all three races on the year.
Right behind her was junior
Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) who set a personal record taking 82nd in 19:42, 56 seconds better than her run as a sophomore.
“They are off to a good start and are in a position for very good year,” added Murray.
Sophomore
Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) was the third Titan to cross the finish line running the course in 20:09, good for 103rd.
The next four Titan harriers were all in right around each other as freshman
Rachel Hofsess (Milford, MI/Milford) earned 130th (20:44), while senior
Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) was 136th in 20:53. The varsity seven rounded out with rookie
Victoria Eger (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan) placing 141st (20:59) and sophomore
Sarah Martinez's (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) 147th-place effort with a time of 21:06.
Detroit will have an extra week of practice before hitting the road to Kentucky to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 2.
