Eagles Have Strong Showing At EMU Fall Classic

DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country teams both had solid performances this afternoon, Oct. 23, at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. Several EMU runners, past and present, were well represented among the field.

In the women's 5,000-meter event, senior Beverly Elcock (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) ran unattached as she worked on her comeback from knee surgery, finishing 43rd with a time of 19:32.9. Sophomore Beth Zimpfer (Maplewood, Ohio-Jackson Center) was next to cross the finish line for the Eagles at 19:48.3, a 25.3 second improvement from last season's outing at the EMU Classic. Freshman Kaitlin Fenech (Dearborn, Mich.-Divine Child) finished at 19:57.8 for the Green and White, while Lauren Lunsford (Miamisburg, Ohio-Miamisburg) and Brooke Scuillo (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) took 62nd (20:08.1) and 77th (20:51.1), respectively.

In the men's 9,000-meter event, former Eastern harrier Corey Nowitzke posted a time of 29:29.0 and was first to cross the finish line, while EMU alum Kyle Mena took third with a time of 29:51.0. Nick Petro (Erie, Mich.-Monroe) was solid this afternoon with an 11th place overall finish time of 30:54.0. Teammate Justin Huey (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) clinched 15th place at 31:30.0.

Freshman Grzegorz Kalinowski (Gostkowo, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) had a stellar outing in the men's 5,000-meter race. His time of 15:28.5 earned him a first place overall finish, the first in his young career. Cody Chabola (Kingsville, Ohio-Edgewood) was the next EMU runner to finish, crossing the line at 15:40.0 for the seventh spot. Last year's 10,000-meter top finisher, EMU Alum Curtis Vollmar, followed with an eighth place time of 15:42.8. Senior Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater) and Matt Wines (Pinckney, Mich.- Pinckney) rounded out the top-10, finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.

Both the men's and women's squads will return to action for the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, in Three Rivers, Mich. at the Pine View Golf Course. The women's 6,000-meter event is scheduled for 11 a.m., while the men's 8,000-meter is slated for a noon start.
