YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team opened its 34th season in convincing style here, at Bob Parks Track on the campus of EMU, by registering an 84-55 win over the University of Toledo in the Eagle-Rocket Holiday Dual Meet, Friday, Dec. 10.

Eastern started out the gates strong and never let up as the women took first-place in 12 of the 14 events, including Asia Rawls' record-breaking time in the 500-meter run. The sophomore sprinter from Waterford broke the record by running a time of 1:14.15.

Other impressive sprinting performances came from fellow sophomore Ashlee Abraham, who won the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.04, and junior ReJeana Marigna, who took home first place in the 300-meter run with a time of 39.59.

In the distance events, the Eagles were able to pull a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,000-meter run as Beverly Elcock, Lauren Quaintance and Natalie Webb crossed the line in that order. Ashley Wartley also notched a win for EMU in the 60-meter hurdles as she turned in the only sub-nine second time.

Junior Angela Scarber swept the throwing events as she picked up from where she left off last season, winning both the hammer throw as well as the shot put events. Senior pole vaulter Jessica Hemmingway (formerly Jessica Novakowski) showed why she was second runner up in the Mid-American Conference last season as she won the pole vault event. Shnell Wishart got her first taste of collegiate winning as the freshman triple jumper leapt her way to a first-place finish as well.

Other wins for the women included the 4x200-meter and the 4x400-meter relays.

The Eagles will be off for the next four weeks before returning to competition at the EMU Open, which will also be held at Bowen Fieldhouse, on Jan. 8, 2011.
