YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
It was a grand weekend for Eastern Michigan University junior student-athlete Kevin Lanier, as he trumped a 10-year-old heptathlon record at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Meet in Allendale, Mich., posting a score of 5,224 points in the seven-event contest. The previous record of 5,102 points was held by Dave Stewart, which he set in 2000.

Lanier imposed his dominance early and often, winning four event, coming in second place in one event, and finishing fifth in the final two events. In the 60-meter dash, Lanier won finishing 7.07, while he also took the long jump with a mark of 22-10.50. Lanier's final two wins came in the high jump, where he posted a leap of 6-06.75, and the 60-meter hurdles, which he won in 8.10. His second-place finish came in the shot put, while he finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run and the pole vault.

Also competing in the heptathlon for EMU were Tim Fuller, who finished fifth, and Jeremy McCormick, who finished ninth.

This weekend also highlighted the Eagles' Holiday Classic, which is an effort to combine two past EMU events--the Inter Squad meet and the old Christmas Holiday Meet. Saturday's events were devoted to Youth/Age group events which attracted clubs from as far away as Florida and Georgia and produced the boy's number one high jump mark in the nation for 2010. The track meet concluded with an Athlete Concert at Eagle Crest's Marriott Hotel. Sunday's Collegiate/Open events were highlighted by a career best 60HH for Vanier Joseph, the defending MAC hurdles Champion.
