Abraham Nears Bowen Record, Women Win Eight Events

– The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field squad had another stellar showing as the team competed in their second meet of the 2010-11 season Saturday, Jan. 8, at the EMU Invite on Bob Parks Track inside of Bowen Fieldhouse.

Sophomore sprinter Ashlee Abraham stole the show, as she won the 60-meter dash in record fashion. The Southfield, Mich. product came just two-one hundredths of a second away from setting a Bowen record as she raced to a first-place, 7.47 second finish. She also finished the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.25, good for a second-place finish, hitting an NCAA Provisional Qualifier mark in the process.

The Eagles were able to dominate the meet—which featured competitors from the University of Michigan, Siena Heights, University of Detroit and Oakland University—winning eight of the 14 events.
Beverly Elcock was able to continue to build upon her debut performance, winning the 800-meter run in 2:14.01, edging out Michigan's Alex Williams, who crossed in 2:14.84 good for second place. In the other mid-distance race, it was All-Mid-American Conference runner Shantavia Williams who captured the win, as she ran a sub-57-second 400-meter run.

In the field, junior Angela Scarber showed why she is one of the Eagles' top throwers. After garnering Field Athlete of the Week for her Holiday Meet performance, Scarber was able to capture a win in the shot put with a toss of 43-05.75 and a second-place finish in the weight throw with a throw of 53-11.75. Senior captain Jessica Hemmingway also stepped up in a large way with a pole vault win, clearing a height of 12-11.50.

Other Eagle wins came from Tiffany Kincaid, as she took the 3,000-meter run, newcomer Shnell Wishart with a triple jump of 41-01.75 and the 4x400-meter quartet of Rosie White, Naomi Andre, Asia Rawls and Shantavia Williams.

The Eagles will be next be in action on Friday, Jan. 14, as the team travels to Allendale, Mich. for the Bob Eubanks Open.
