MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team went head-to-head with four other teams and beat each of them handily, as the squad competed at the Chip Invite, Friday, Jan. 14, in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
The invite, featuring EMU, host school Central Michigan, Aquinas, Detroit and Oakland, pitted each team against each other, so finished were scored against each opposing team instead of in an overall, traditional format. The Eagles largest margin of victory was a 108-28 score over Aquinas, while the Green and White defeated Central, 94-65, the closest of all four scores.
Kevin Lanier continued to impress, as he won the high jump (6-08.00), ran the anchor for the winning 4x400-meter relay team, and set a personal record with a second-place, 8.07 finish in the 60-meter high hurdles.
Freshman transfer
Grzegorz Kalinowski continued carried over his cross country success into the track and field season, winning his first collegiate race—the 800-meter run—with a time of 1:56.62. He did the same thing, winning his first cross country race of the season when he competed for the Eagles in the fall.
Senior captain
Clint Allen, also competing for the first time this season, brought home two wins in his only action, winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83 and also doing his part to bring a win in the 4x400-meter relay.
EMU scored victories in the 600-meter run (
Josh George), the pole vault (
Max Babits), the mile run (
Terefe Ejigu), the 200-meter dash (Jairus Saunders) and the 3,000-meter run (
James Hughes). Two-time Mid-American Conference hurdles champ
Vanier Joseph also won the 60-meter hurdles, setting a personal best time of 7.87 in the prelims.
“Being so early in the season and with so many freshmen and sophomores filling so many of our top team positions, this meet served as another opportunity for evaluation of where we are and where we need to be headed from both a training and competitive perspective,” said Head Coach
