Girls & Women In Sport Day A Rousing Success

DETROIT -- It was a Saturday filled with fun and excitement as The University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department celebrated Girls & Women in Sport Day.

The event was held in the Student Union building on campus with this year's theme titled “Lunch with the Titans”. All of those who participated took joined Detroit student-athletes for an early lunch and a chance to get to the athletes, their sports and about college. Guest speakers for the event in included Titan women's basketball assistant coaches Emily Samuelson and Brigid Mulroy, who both gave a short speech on important values that they wanted to share with the audience.

After lunch, all of the participants moved downstairs to the Fountain Lounge as the UDM student-athletes gave a few lessons on their respective sports.

The day ended with all of those in attendance cheering on the Titans as Detroit hosted Wright State in women's basketball. At halftime of the event, the participants once again took center stage as they entertained the crowd with a spirit performance alongside the Detroit cheering squad.

“It was a great day and everyone involved from the kids to the student-athletes, coaches and staff members had a lot of fun,” said UDM Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator Teri Kromrei. “I think all of those that participated learned a little about every sport and about the importance of women's athletics.”

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrated 25 years as an annual event that brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States since its enactment in 1971.
