Live Updates

2011 Horizon League Championship Schedule of Events

INDIANAPOLIS – The Detroit Titans will compete in the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8. The 14th annual event will be hosted by Butler University and will take place at the IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Track Stadium.

“The track at IUPUI has hosted some big meets including the 1988 Olympic Trials,” Head Coach Guy Murray said. “We look forward to returning to the world class facility in Indianapolis. If the weather cooperates the performances will be very good on this track.”

Friday's action will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the decathlon and heptathlon. The finals of the discus and the 10,000-meter run will also be held on Friday afternoon. Saturday's schedule will begin with the decathlon and heptathlon at 9:00 a.m., while field events will start at 1:30 p.m. Preliminary running events will start at 3:00 p.m. The meet will come to a close on Sunday with the field events getting underway at 11:00 a.m., while the running events will start at noon with the women's 4x100 meter relay.

Milwaukee claimed both the men's and women's titles last year, with the men claiming its seventh consecutive title, and the women winning their first championship since 2007. Detroit placed fifth on the men's side, while the women's team placed sixth.

Senior Earnest Cleary will attempt to win the 100-meter dash for third consecutive year. Cleary will have some work to do as he currently holds the 11th fastest time in the league coming into the weekend (11.08). He crossed the finish line at 10.82 a year ago to take First Team All-Horizon League honors.

Vushaun Landrum and Deonte Osayande will also look to score for Detroit in the 100-meter dash. Landrum currently holds the fifth best time in the league at 10.93, while Osayande is at 10th (11.07).

Lesley Hanna enters the weekend with the best time in both the 200 and 400-meter dash. Hanna clocked in at 21.07 while competing at the Beach Invitational back on April 16th to record the top time in the 200-meter dash. His time of 46.72 at the 53rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays gave him the top time in the 400-meter dash. The senior currently holds the 45th best time in the nation (46.72) and the 21st best time in the east region. Hanna placed second in the 400-meter dash a year ago earning Second Team All-HL honors (47.37).

Patrick Liederbach has the fifth best time in both the 1500 and 5000-meter run. The senior ran 3:51.31 at the Oakland Dual in the 1500, and crossed the line at 14:35.32 at the Mt. SAC Relays in the 5000. A year ago Liederbach earned Second Team All-HL honors in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:34.96.

Detroit has three athletes with impressive times in the 110-meter hurdles. Aviram Campbell and Steven Ivanics recorded their season-best times last weekend at the Gina Relays. Campbell holds the fifth best time (14.88), while Ivanics is close behind at seventh. Taylor Hennrick rounds out the group. His best time of the season came at the Northwood Open on April 14 (15.29).

Sophomore Vince Lefler moved to second in the Horizon League in the 400-meter hurdles. He crossed the finish line at 54.49 last weekend at the Gina Relays. Teammate Anthony Donald has also ran well in the 400-meter hurdles. Donald posted a time of 54.61 at the Bryan Clay Invite.

The men's team should battle for a top spot in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay events. The Titans are currently second in both events. In 2010 the team of Cleary, Osayande, Landrum and Sam Jones finished second with a time of 41.88. All four members earned Second Team All-HL honors.

Off the track, Ja'Quan Patterson will look to score some points for Detroit in the long jump. Patterson holds the third farthest mark in the league (22-9). Freshman Eric Lewis will pace the Titans in the throw events. Lewis is the team leader in the shot put (43-3), discus (143-4), and hammer throw (163-11). Lesley Hanna also found success for Detroit in the high jump competition. Hanna was a Second Team All-HL honoree in 2010.

“There is a positive buzz with the men's team after the performance we put together at the indoor championships,” Murray explained. “Projections are similar to the indoor meet with Milwaukee and Youngstown battling for the top spot and the rest of use battling for third. We definitely have the capability to finish in the top 3, but we don't have much room for error. This is a great meet and we are looking forward to a tremendous effort from this group.”

Sequoyia Calhoun highlights the women's team with a chance to win the 400-meter dash. Calhoun enters the weekend with the best 400m time in the league (55.80). A year ago Calhoun set a UDM record in the event clocking in at 56.10. She earned Second Team All-HL honors.

Kirstin Mooney will look to score points for Detroit in the 800-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles. Mooney holds the seventh best time in each event (800m - 2:16.28 / 400mH – 1:05.10). Olivia Smid also has a top time in the 400-meter hurdles. Smid clocked in at 1:05.33 at the EMU Twilight. It is the eighth best time in the league.

Three Titans will battle for points in the 200-meter dash. Nicole Meisner, Brandee Hart, and Nikia Duncan have continued to improve for Detroit throughout the season. Meisner has the sixth best time in the league (25.62), while Hart and Duncan are right behind her for seventh (25.64) and eighth (25.67).

“Our young women's team put together a positive season and we have some opportunities to end the year on a high note,” Murray said. “Our veterans have done very well this year and we will need them to set the pace. Sequoyia and Kirstin have had tremendous years, so I look forward to them having a great outdoor championship meet.”
