Track & Field Ends Day One of HL Championships

Day One Results

INDIANAPOLIS ā€“ The 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships are officially underway as the Titans competed in the decathlon, discus and 10,000-meter run on Friday.

Taylor Hennrick got off to a great start in the decathlon by setting a personal record in the first three events on Friday afternoon. He opened the Horizon League Championships by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97. Hennrick became the fourth Titan to run a sub-11 100-meter dash in the event.

Hennrick placed third in the long jump with a distance of 21-7.50 (6.59m), and took second place in the shot put with a distance of 35-3.25 (10.75m). After a fifth place finish in the high jump (1.65m / 5-5), Hennrick finished the day with yet another personal record taking first place in the 400-meter dash (51.28). He posted a score of 3,367 after day one. The decathlon will continue tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

Eric Lewis was in action for Detroit in the discus. The freshman placed ninth overall with a throw of 134-10 (41.10).

The final event on Friday was the men's 10,000-meter run. Detroit just missed scoring as Alex Harris placed seventh (31:41.37). Freshman Martin Nelkie made his debut in the event placing 10th (32:19.10), while Erik Westbrook rounded out the group with a time of 33:17.88 (13th place).


Field events including the javelin, hammer throw, pole vault, and long jump will take place tomorrow. The men's javelin will run first at 1:30 p.m. Running events will begin at 3:00 p.m.
