Calhoun Honored as Team MVP

DETROIT – Head Coach Guy Murray announced postseason awards for the women's track and field team on Monday at a luncheon held in the Titan Club. Senior Sequoyia Calhoun took the top honor being named team MVP for both the indoor and outdoor season.

Calhoun was crowned as the Horizon League Champion in the 400-meter dash. She won the event during the indoor season with a time of 56.03, and she most recently won the 400 at the HL Outdoor Championships with a time of 54.93 (UDM Record). Calhoun was also a key contributor to the 4x400 meter relay team that placed second at the Outdoor Championships.

The Student-Athlete Award went to Megan Miller for the indoor season and Olivia Smid for the outdoor season. Miller posted the 12th fastest 400-meter dash time in the league during the indoor season when she crossed the line in 59.86 at the Silverston Invitational. She was also part of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished fourth at the HL Indoor Championships with a time of 3:57.83.

Smid recorded the 19th best 400-meter dash time in the league at the EMU Twilight crossing the finish line in 1:02.77, yet her best event proved to be the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore made it to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles at the HL Outdoor Championships and ended the day with a fifth place finish (1:05.21).

Kirstin Mooney was honored with the Coach's Award during the indoor season, while Katie Taylor received the award for the outdoor season. Mooney ran well for Detroit during the indoor season. She made it to the finals of the 800-meter run at the HL Championships and finished in third place with a time of 2:14.81. Mooney was also a part of the 4x400 meter relay team that placed fourth (3:57.83).

Taylor posted the 10th fastest time in the league at the HL Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdle preliminaries (1:07.87). That time moved her to the finals on Sunday where she ended up in seventh place overall with a time of 1:09.06.

The Most Improved Award for the indoor season went to Whitney Rogers. The outdoor award was split between Nikia Duncan and Nicole Meisner. Rogers impacted the team in the jump events. She posted the 10th best long jump distance in the league at the CMU Chippewa Invite with a jump of 17-6 (5.33m). The sophomore also recorded her season-best triple jump distance at the CMU event. She came up with the 12th best distance in the Horizon League with a leap of 35-6.50 (10.83m).

Duncan and Meisner are two freshmen who received the Most Improved Award by developing throughout the course of the season. Duncan posted the 10th best HL time in the 100-meter dash at the Beach Invitational (12.47). She also competed in the 200-meter dash for Detroit. In the 200, Duncan ran a 25.67 at the EMU Twilight marking the 11th fastest league time.

Meisner seemed to peak at the right time as her fastest 100 and 200-meter dash times came at the Horizon League Championships. Meisner ran the 100 in 12.60. She made it to the finals in the 200 and ended the day with an eighth place finish crossing the line in 25.47. These two athletes also helped form the 4x100 meter relay team that finished fourth at the Outdoor Championships with a time of 47.69.

Brandee Hart swept Rookie of the Year honors for both the indoor and outdoor season. This freshman was fantastic during the Outdoor Championships. She placed fifth overall in the 200-meter dash with a personal record time of 25.09. Hart also competed in the 100-meter hurdle finals. She ended the day in eighth place with a time of 14.98. Hart was a key member to both the 4x400 and 4x100 meter relay teams. She helped Detroit finish second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:52.40, and fourth in the 4x100 (47.69).

Hart also impacted the team during the indoor season. She made it to the finals of the 60-meter dash at the HL Championships after running a 9.27 in the prelims. Hart finished eighth overall with a time of 9.20. She was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth (3:57.83).
