Women's Track & Field Honored for Academic Achievements

Track and Field All-Academic Team Release

NEW ORLEANS – The Detroit Titan women's track and field program was recognized as a 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team as announced by the USTFCCCA (United Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association).

In order to receive this honor a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Titans have been recognized as an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA since the award was created back in 2002.

Detroit recorded a grade point average of 3.32, and was one of four Horizon League schools to reach this status. Loyola and Milwaukee each held a GPA of 3.40 while Butler was also in with a 3.28.

A total of 164 institutions earned the distinction. Texas was tabbed as the Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year, while Oklahoma took the same title for the outdoor season. Texas finished as the nation's runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships. They held a cumulative GPA of 3.28 through the 2011 spring semester. Oklahoma placed fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Their team GPA was 3.03.

Princeton reported a cumulative team GPA of 3.68, representing the best GPA in the nation among all divisions of NCAA track & field teams. Iona and Santa Clara followed with team GPAs of 3.57 and 3.56, respectively.

The Big East had 12 of its institutions reach All-Academic status to lead all conferences across the country. Eleven from the Big 12 were also named to the All-Academic list, followed by the Big Ten and Ivy League which claimed eight apiece.
