Women’s Cross Country Competes at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Detroit Titan women's cross country team opened the 2011 season by competing in the 2011 Oakland Grizzly Open on Friday afternoon. Kirstin Mooney led the way by finishing fourth overall.

Mooney crossed the finish line in 15:04 to set a new personal-best at the 4k course held on Oakland's campus. The senior drastically improved her time from a year ago when she ran 15:59 for 20th overall.

Katrina Oberski nearly cracked the top ten with a time of 15:46. Oberski finished 11th overall. She also improved from last year's time of 16:01.

Sarah Martinez and Rachel Hofsess were close behind taking 19th and 23rd respectively. Martinez finished in 16:09 while Hofsess clocked in at 16:29.

Olivia Smid and Torrie Eger finished as a group for the Titans. Smid, who is entering her first season as a cross country runner, completed the race in 16:48. Eger was close behind in 30th place with a time of 16:54.

Sara Taylor and Katie Weishaar rounded out the effort for Detroit. Taylor finished in 45th place (18:39), and Weishaar placed 52nd (19:31).

UDM will return to action next weekend when they host the 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10. The first race will begin at 11:15 a.m.
