25 Years Of The Titan Invite

NORTHVILLE, Mich. -- Despite a slick, muddy course, the Detroit Titans men's cross country team nearly took home a team and individual title as UDM ran the 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass-Benton Park in Northville.

“A successful day and weekend for the 25th anniversary of the race,” said head coach Guy Murray. “The rain made it a test of cross country, battling the elements as well as the other runners without worry about the time.”

The Titans had three runners in the top five, five in the top 15 and six in the top 20 as they totaled 34 points, just four points behind champion Wayne State. Oakland Community College was third with 81, while Macomb Community College placed fourth with 119.

“We did a great job racing and battling back the second loop,” said Murray. “Wayne State was 1-2-3 the first loop around and we worked hard and gave them a run for their money. Our team success this year will be on the pack and moving up late as that is the style that best suits us.”

Freshman Colin Creagh was the top Titan and nearly won the 4-mile race taking second in a time of 21:17, just two seconds behind Wayne State's Travis Barczak. It is the second-straight week that the freshman posted a top five effort after placing fifth at last week's Golden Grizzly Open.

A tremendous race for Colin,” said Murray. “He is a runner suited for the longer distances and displayed those talents here really moving on the second loop of a course that under regular conditions is very tough.”

Sophomore Martin Nelkie and junior Edwin Gay were also in the top five, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Nelkie ran the race in a 21:38, while Gay crossed the finish line in 21:43. Both of those places were improvements from last year when Gay took 19th and Nelkie 20th at the annual Titan home meet.

“Edwin did a great job of finding the second wind and coming back when he hit a rough patch during the race” added Murray.

Senior Bob Radlich earned 12th with a 22:18, while freshman Ylli Alla was 15th in his home Titan debut posting a 22:27. Senior Erik Westbrook was just outside the top 15 taking 16th in 22:28, while sophomore Sam Felton claimed 23rd in 22:55.

The 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational got started on Friday evening as alums of the race and the cross country program got together on campus at the Titan Pavilion.

Saturday's race day started out with some pouring rain, but it did clear up once the college races went off. At 9:30 a.m., the event began with the men's and women's open 5k races, with Matt Fecht winning the men's open race for the third year in a row. Fecht, a WSU alum, has already qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon.

After the open races, the event featured the middle school 1.5 mile race, an addition to the legendary Titan Invite in 2010. The annual Tommy Titan Kids 9-under race followed before the main event in the college showdown.

Detroit returns to action on Friday as UDM heads to another race that has been a part in its history in the National Catholic Championships, hosted by Notre Dame.
